One of those days when things aren’t so black and white, or are they? A or B, apples or bananas, don’t eat this and eat more of that. Things aren’t always as cut and dry as they seem and sometimes it’s hard to make even the simplest choice. Can’t decide between chocolate or vanilla, like a kid standing at the ice cream shop and then you are introduced to the swirl! You can have them both! I was having one of those mornings where I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I was going to have them both! Just finishing a workout that wasn’t too intense I was debating between two of my favorite protein powders as well… so again I did both! Of course my youngest came running when she heard the Vitamix and requested one as well and as I was starting hers her sister also decided she wanted one so we made a few, a version of each chocolate and vanilla with and without protein powder and since they liked them all, the protein ones more so, I did half and half for each of them as well one getting the vanilla protein with non chocolate protein and the other with chocolate protein and vanilla non protein.

Black and White Smoothie

Makes 1

1 1/2- 2 c almond milk, or non dairy milk of choice (used 1 1/2 cups of So Delicious Almond Milk Plus, for extra protein)

1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder (used Vega One Chocolate)*

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (used Vega Performance Protein Vanilla)*

Ice or frozen banana chunks

“Kids” Version

Makes 1-2

1 1/2- 2 c coconut milk, or non dairy milk of choice (used 1 1/2 cups of So Delicious Unsweetened Vanilla Coconut Milk)

2 frozen bananas, chunks

1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder (Vega Protein Smoothie Choc-A-Lot)*

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (Vega Protein Smoothie Viva Vanilla)*

Or

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

2 TBSP cacao powder

sweetener of choice for chocolate layer, to desired taste

*Protein powders can be interchanged or you can use the one that works best for you and your nutritional needs when you are making it.

In a Vitamix, or high-speed blender, blend together half of the milk, vanilla protein powder or vanilla extract, and half banana or ice until smooth. Pour into glass if you want them layered top to bottom if you want side by side pour into a glass or another container while making the chocolate. No need to rinse the blender if you do the vanilla before the chocolate. Blend together remaining milk, chocolate protein powder or cacao powder, and banana or ice until smooth. Test for sweetness if using cacao powder and add sweetener of choice as desired. Layer on top of the vanilla, or if you want them side by side pour the vanilla and chocolate into glass at the same time. It is best to have them both the same consistency and the thicker they are the clearer the separation will be. Mine was thin and colors closer to each other than the kids version which was made with banana and much thicker. Enjoy!

As a Vega Recipe Ambassador I receive Vega products, which I used as an option in this recipe. I use Vega not because it is given to me but because it has been my plant-based protein of choice since before I started blogging and some recipes are made with Vega products I purchase. I only write about foods I love, my blog is an extension of my hobby to make fun healthy food creations for me and my family.
