So we interrupt regularly scheduled posting to bring you this healthy delicious VEGAN alternative to the Starbucks Molten Chocolate Frappuccino! I had planned on posting a Valentine’s Day version of a favorite dessert, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup-Cakes, but instead I just couldn’t help but post this when I whipped it up yesterday. Crazy because I had about 8 posts originally I wanted to post this week and narrowed it down to just 3! That was hard because there were 4-5 I really wanted to post, and one of the ones was the one I had planned but it got bumped. I posted a sneak… keep scrolling. With that though I will post it this weekend so you can still make it in time for Valentine’s Day because after posting a sneak peak of this shake I just can’t wait until next week to post the recipe. My coffee shakes/smoothies seem to be favorites on the blog and after an oldie but a goodie my Mocha Protein Shake just being included on Self.com for 11 high protein breakfasts I figured it might be time for an update. Oh and not to mention that I keep seeing these Starbucks Molten Chocolate Latte and Frappuccino pictures every where and keep going between the oh that sounds so good and oh that sounds too rich, sugary, and empty calories because it is pushing some big numbers in both sugar and calories. That said going out for a coffee is usually a treat and when I go I don’t really pay attention to the calories or sugar as long as it isn’t an all the time thing and just a treat I think it’s ok, well for me.

I had every intention of going to Starbucks when picking up my husband from the airport yesterday, since he loves chocolate and mocha and this is limited edition and only available through Valentine’s Day, but instead we didn’t make it there so when I got home I whipped up this shake and it did not disappoint! To break it down the Molten Chocolate Frappuccino Blended Beverage consists of coffee with rich mocha sauce and chocolatey chips blended with milk and ice. This beverage is finished with mocha and espresso-infused whipped cream and an espresso mocha drizzle. Ok so what is in this Molten Chocolate Protein Shake? Non dairy milk blended with mocha protein powder, cacao nibs, and ice topped with a mocha espresso infused coconut whipped cream topped with an espresso mocha drizzle. All dairy free, vegan, and gluten free. There is the option to add 2 shots of espresso as well as it can be made with chocolate protein powder and espresso powder if you don’t have mocha protein. So sounds like I have all the elements covered, it’s delicious, has superfoods and nutrients in it not to mention protein packed, some sugar with the drizzle and coconut whipped cream but considerably less than the Starbucks version. So share the love and whip one of these up for yourself and someone you love! While I love my coffee dates with my girls and with my husband (usually at different times) I would much rather avoid the crowd and go for a heart healthy run with him and whip these up after!

Molten Chocolate Protein Shake
Makes 1 serving
1c non dairy milk (used So Delicious Unsweetened Almond Milk)
1 scoop mocha protein powder, or chocolate plus 1-2 tsp instant espresso (used Vega Performance Protein, Mocha)
1 TBSP cacao nibs (used Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs)
1c ice
2 shots espresso, optional
Mocha Espresso Whipped Cream, see below
Espresso Mocha Drizzle, see below

Mocha Espresso Whipped Cream
Makes enough for 2-3 shakes
1c So Delicious Coco Whip, thawed
2 TBSP cacao powder (used Navitas Naturals Cacao)
1 tsp espresso powder (used Williams Sonoma Espresso Powder)

Espresso Mocha Chocolate Drizzle
Makes enough for 2-3+ shakes*
1 TBSP coconut oil, melted
1 TBSP agave or maple syrup
2 TBSP cacao powder (used Navitas Naturals Cacao)
1 tsp espresso powder (used Williams Sonoma Espresso Powder)

*Or make 1 shake and enjoy the extra with fresh strawberries!

In a small bowl fold cacao powder and espresso powder into the whipped cream until just combine. Place mixture in a frosting bag, if you want it fancy, and then place mixture in the freezer while making the rest of the shake. In a small bowl whisk together coconut oil, agave/maple syrup, cacao powder, and espresso powder until smooth. If using syrup that is chilled you may want to warm the mixture in the microwave for a few seconds so it is smooth and pourable and set aside. In a Vitamix, or high-speed blender, blend milk, protein powder, ice and optional espresso. Just as all the ice is blended pour in the cacao nibs to blend the last few seconds. Pour shake into a glass, top with chilled Mocha Espresso Whipped Cream, and drizzle with the Espresso Mocha Chocolate Drizzle. Cheers and enjoy!

It’s Friday so spreading the love for good eats and linking up with Annmarie for Foodie Friday!

While I do receive some Vega products from time to time, which I listed as an option in this recipe, I do purchase much of it on my own. It has been my plant-based protein of choice since before I started blogging. Even though most Vega products used are purchased by myself I do add this disclaimer. I do not make any money off any Vega sales or posts. I only write about foods I love, my blog is an extension of my hobby to make fun healthy food creations for me and my family.
