One of the top viewed creations on my site is my Birthday No Cake Shake I posted 3 years ago on my birthday. I posted it less than a month after starting my blog on my birthday. Looking back it is still just as delicious, birthday or not, but the pictures are far from “good”. This is ok, it shows me where I started, how far I’ve come, and I have been meaning to find the time to go back and update some of the photos on my favorite and most popular posts. I was just snapping photos with my cell phone or camera on the kitchen table back then. My passion was and still is in the recipe creation and so I didn’t spend too much time then on my pictures. Even though I have said again and again I’m one who loves pictures with my recipes, well when it comes to cookbooks. It is one of the reasons I set up my blog the way I did with all the photos being the focal point on my homepage. I was posting daily when I started, sometimes multiple times because I would get so excited about a recipe or creation and couldn’t wait to share it. While my creativity and ideas haven’t slowed down I’m trying to take more time with the posts, writing more than a sentence or two and the photography.
Lucky number 3, the updates in products over the years, and coming up on another birthday seemed like the perfect time to update the post. It was also perfect to whip it up before my birthday because I won’t be home to whip one up on my birthday and I can’t really pack my Vitamix with me to whip it up and well I’ll be at one of the “happiest and magical places on Earth” and I’m sure I’ll find a birthday treat there. Yep I had to pack light as I’m surprising the girls with a little trip to Disney after Expo West so I had to pack light to sneak in all their stuff.
So what has changed or been updated… well the new Vega protein is even better! It’s my protein of choice since before starting my blog and the newest version of Vanilla Sport Protein reminds me of angel food cake! So with that I left out the almond extract but if I was to use another vanilla I would add it. Or if you want to make a chocolate Birthday No Cake Shake that’s fine too… cause it’s your birthday (or not)! I’m not a big frosting fan either, funny since I love baking and making cakes and big elaborate ones with frosting and fondant. So Delicious also now makes a coconut “cool whip” called Coco Whip that I always have on hand and if my local Whole Foods stops carrying it I will probably cry and pout like a little kid sitting in the middle of the freezer section. What’s better than cake? A layered cake! So with that I decided to add in a Coco Whip Swirl, of course this is optional you can just add coconut whipped cream on top. Sprinkles on the other hand are not optional, so have fun and go crazy!
As I said my photography has improved but wouldn’t you know it I whipped up and swirled a shake and the sun went away and I just couldn’t photograph this for hours, not only would it melt but it was screaming DRINK ME! Yep just like Alice In Wonderland I had this magical feeling when I drank it, would I get bigger or smaller? Neither which is probably a good thing.
It doesn’t have to be your birthday, call it an Un Birthday No Cake Shake if you want or even a Sprinkle Cake Shake, to enjoy this shake. Sometimes you just need some sprinkles and cake in your life to brighten your day. So cheers and someone please enjoy one of these for me tomorrow.

While I do receive some Vega products from time to time, which I listed as an option in this recipe, I do purchase much of it on my own. It has been my plant-based protein of choice since before I started blogging. Even though most Vega products used are purchased by myself I do add this disclaimer. I do not make any money off any Vega sales or posts. I only write about foods I love, my blog is an extension of my hobby to make fun healthy food creations for me and my family.

This looks absolutely delicious! I love the idea of adding almond extract for that cakey flavor – I’ll have to grab some on my way home tonight!
awhiskandtwowands
Thank you! It depends on the protein powder you use as the new Vega tastes like angel food cake to me. If I use a plain vanilla protein than a little almond extract is key to get that cake taste. Hope you enjoy it!
Susie @ Suzlyfe
um YUM! But you do have to be careful with the Almond extract, but yes. Isn’t it funny how random the most popular recipes are?
awhiskandtwowands
Yes a little goes a long way with almond extract! It is odd and funny and I still cannot figure it out!
